NIGHT + MARKET BRINGS A TASTE OF SOUTHEAST ASIA TO THE SUNSET STRIP
By: Brent X Mendoza
Just down the street from The Roxy Theatre, Talésai on The Sunset Strip has been dishing out tasty Thai cuisine to notoriously picky L.A. palates for nearly 30 years. Family owned and operated since the beginning, the restaurant is now expanding on their recipe for success and opening a neighboring “sister space”, serving up simple yet delectable street food.
The vision of chef/owner Kris Yenbamroong, Night + Market delivers a menu of Thai tapas in a unique gallery like setting. Having practically grown up in the restaurant’s kitchen, the chef has been cooking almost as long as he’s been able to hold a fork. “I’ve always been a fan of food that tastes amazing and isn’t fussy. I want everything on the plate to be essential to the dish, so that means no garnish, or fluff. That’s what street food is; it’s one thing that tastes really good and maybe one other element, like a condiment.”
It is this mantra that defines Night + Market’s to the point flavorful fare. Dishes like fried chicken wings with northern Thai salsa, flank steak jerky, and crispy catfish with shredded green mango salad have a real comfort food quality that encourages sharing and passing. The concise menu of apps along with carefully chosen beer and wine pairings reads like a summary, short list of can’t fail street food favorites.
In keeping with this less is more, no frills simplicity, the airy dining space feels more like an art gallery than a restaurant with its polished concrete floors and communal dining benches; the idea being a sort of experiment in social interaction. With art/photography on the walls, projected films, and shared table utensils and condiments, the ambiance gives diners plenty of topics to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger.
In essence, Yenbamroong is selling not just food, but a dining experience. With weekly menu updates, rotating art exhibitions, and eventual plans to book live bands, each and every dining experience at Night + Market will be not only tasty but completely unique.
