Goldwash
When it comes to Gabe Acheson, aka Goldwash, the clue really is in the name. The London-born, Baltimore-raised, LA-residing songwriter makes the kind of dance-while-you-cry music practiced by the likes of TV On The Radio and the Dirty Projectors. He calls the sound “Existential Funk” - a name cribbed from a New Yorker article about cult TV show Adventure Time - and it’s really all to do with “turning shitty experiences into positive things,” by “goldwashing” (gilding) difficult things and transforming them into palatable, beautiful art. He deals with the ups and downs of life through intricate yet relatable songwriting and composition.

A classically trained pianist, Acheson’s childhood was spent hearing songs and subsequently trying to figure them out on keyboard; a love of jazz spurred him into writing music of his own. “I got into production because I was composing and I didn’t have anyone to play my music,” he describes. “I didn’t have an orchestra at my disposal and so I was like, oh, a synthesiser will kind of do it.”

Acheson and his synthesizers certainly have done it too. Now, with his first release of the year, we have the upcoming single Why Hide It. It’s a perfect encapsulation of The Goldwash Sound™ - at once moody and uplifting.

Goldwash performs with a novel band arrangement that modernizes a traditional jazz trio. He plays keyboards and sings, accompanied by a percussionist playing acoustic and electronic drums. The band is rounded out with a baritone saxophonist/guitarist who plays both instruments through a pedalboard and also adds lush background vocals.
