Gimme Gimme More Shelter

No Britney Spears will not be performing at The Roxy on December 11. But we did get a little love from a guest blogger named Olivia Giovetti. Thanks for the love Olivia!

The Last Gimme Shelter - 12/11

Gimme, gimme, gimme – the holidays are all about the gimmes and the givies. But only “Gimme Shelter” at The Roxy givies as much as it gimmes. And with everyone from Mandy Moore to Pete Yorn to Phantom Planet playing this year (the final concert after 16 years), that’s something to be thankful for.

Concert benefits the Spectrum Program (for autistic children) at New Roads School in Santa Monica (a rockin’ independent college prep schoold).
Why: School of Rock didn’t end with Jack Black.
When: Tues. December 11th. 7 p.m.
Where: The Roxy Theatre, 9009 West Sunset Blvd. (310-278-9457)

Nico Stai Is Kind Of Cute!

We are so excited to welcome Nico Stai to the Roxy stage for the first time! A word of mouth artist, who’s been coined as “…the new boss” by Flaunt Magazine and compared to the likes of Matt Costa with his “achingly emotional acoustic tunes. Beautiful melodies and all the sensibilities of the purest singer-songwriters” according to Cd We’re pretty happy to have him, along with Monster in the Machine, Robert Francis, and ROCKFOUR. Definitely a show to check out! Oh, and he’s kind of cute.

Angie Stone

A singer, a self-taught keyboardist, and a prolific songwriter, Angie Stone’s first claim to fame was being the lead vocalist on Vertical Hold’s smooth urban dance track “Seems You’re Much Too Busy.” An R&B Top 40 hit during the summer of 1993, it eventually led to a solo career, and her debut album Black Diamond was issued in 1999 by Arista. In six years, Stone had definitely gained an old-school, autobiographical vibe, exemplified by her hit ballad “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” which has samples from Gladys Knight and the Pips’ “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye).” Contributors included Lenny Kravitz and former Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammad as producers, and Stone’s ex-boyfriend D’Angelo as a vocal guest on “Everyday.”

The Speed of Night…

For all you Nascar fans you possibly missed out on the most exciting thing to park in front of The Roxy Theatre.

Jack Daniel’s and Clint Boyer’s 07 Car hit the Sunset Strip making a few stops along the way. Most importantly stopping here where quite a few fans were hanging.

Bullets and Octane

“With the hordes of sound-alike, look-alike, act-alike punk bands emerging from the clubs and recording studios of Southern California over the past decade-plus, you’d think that any remote deviation from the accepted norm in the scene would be scowled and frowned upon by audiences comfortable with the lack of innovation and meager compositions.

But, for Orange County-based Bullets and Octane, such reaction is the exact opposite. Fronted by lead vocalist Gene Bullets— and further propelled by the backing of bassist Brent Clawson, drummer Ty Smith and guitarists Jack Tankersley and Skye Jayne — the no-bullshit, pure-attitude punk-bred rock ‘n roll fivesome have received nothing but praise, adulation and in turn, have developed a rabid fan base that has continually packed clubs throughout the region.”

DJ Andy Smith

Andy Smith is the originator of the major-label multi-genre mix album. When his mix-CD The Document hit the streets in 1998, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut’s Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more – The Document and its follow ups Document II and Document III filled the void.

The Document III and other mixes
Having sold in excess of 130,000 copies of The Document I and II, Andy released the eagerly anticipated The Document III on Sanctuary Records in 2005. The mix features artists as diverse as Muddy Waters, Freda Payne, Showbiz and AG, Black Sabbath and Aldo Vanucci.

The Document mix CD series reflects Smith’s well honed DJ style of playing good music whatever the genre from his mixed bag of vinyl treasures.

The series has proved so popular that Trojan Records asked Andy to breathe new life into their back catalogue by releasing a reggae spin off called The Trojan Document in 2006. Record Kicks releases Andy’s latest compilation Lets Boogaloo Volume 4 in 2007.

Andy originally made his name back in the 1990s as Portishead’s world tour DJ reflecting their respect for both the art of digging for breaks and hip-hop scratch DJing. This appreciation of different genres made Andy the ideal guy to provide sample material for Portishead. These hip-hop elements helped form the basis of the unique Portishead sound.

Debby Holiday experienced every aspect of the music industry early on. Her father Jimmy Holiday was a passionate and soulful artist, topping the charts with several of his own singles before going on to co-write such hits as “Understanding” by Ray Charles and Jackie DeShannons “Put A Little Love In Your Heart”. Another standard “All I Ever Need Is You”, turned out to not only be a top 10 single for Sonny and Cher but also went on to be a huge country hit for Kenny Rogers and Dottie West. The Mother Hips

“The Mother Hips are divinely inspired by the four great (North) American B’s: The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Band and The Beach Boys” – Rolling Stone

Formed in 1991 at Chico State in Northern California, The Mother Hips have run the gamut of experiences as a band – from dorm band to buzz band to cult favorite. They took an extended break which nearly became a permanent one after the 2001 album’s release, but decided to reconvene a few years ago, first playing shows, and now as a full-fledged band, writing, recording and releasing new music.

Res (pronounced ‘reese’) grew up listening to her parents’ Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Teddy Pendergrass albums at home. Bob Mould

Guitarist/singer/songwriter Bob Mould was initially a member of Hüsker Dü, one of the most influential American bands of the ’80s. Hüsker Dü was a post-hardcore punk band that helped define the sound and ideals of alternative rock. After Hüsker Dü broke up, Mould signed a solo contract with Virgin Records in 1988. The following year, he released his first solo album, Workbook, which represented a major shift in sonic direction. Workbook was an introspective collection, featuring keyboards, acoustic guitars, and even strings.

As longtime music aficionados, the members of the modern rock troop Mae are always listening for a song that makes everything stand still. “For us, that’s what music is about,” says singer-guitarist Dave Elkins, who formed the band with drummer Jacob Marshall, and is now joined by guitarist Zach Gehring, bassist Mark Padgett and keyboardist Rob Sweitzer. “I remember listening to Matthew Sweet on my Walkman as a kid and feeling like I was on cloud nine. That’s what we want to do for other people. We want to write songs that people connect to.”

The Remedy For Your Deadly Syndrome…

The Deadly Syndrome: a bio in two parts

Part One, “The Truth”
Four young gentlemen were born to 8 parents. One from New York, One from Louisiana, and the rest from California. Through a series of fortunate events (broken bones, concussions, divorces, successful marriages, siblings, fishing trips, and dreams), the boys all found their way to Los Angeles. The California boys had already known each other from University, and moved there together. The New Yorker moved because it was time to move, and the New Orleanite, moved because of the weather. Then through jobs, and girlfriends the fellows came to realize that they wanted to do something more with their hands, so they built bridges, and verses, and pre-choruses. The 4 guys are now The Deadly Syndrome, where all have a hand in writing the music.

Part Two, “The Lie”
One of them is a liar.

3 Nice Jewish Boys And A Microphone

My sister and I flew all the way out to Baltimore, MD to catch the Beastie Boys at The Virgin Music Festival but much to our shagrin our friend got a little sick and we only caught almost 3 full songs… enough to wet the craving but not enough to kill the hunger. So when we heard that our cousin bought a few tickets to The Greek we were thrilled.

A. We could catch a full set.
B. Totally a Greek virgin and have wanted to check a proper show out.

The show was masterful and we were surrounded by uber excited people thrashing around, people tossing their hair in other’s faces inappropriately, and people jumping into the aisles just to dance but quickly being kiboshed by the security. The Greek is a great outdoor theatre that I highly recommend! And The Beastie Boys may be a little older but they rock like the 20-somethings that brought it hard in 1986. Gotta love it!

Jonas Brothers

“Music on Red Bull.” Without hesitating, that’s how 17-year-old Kevin Jonas describes the hyper-adrenalized sounds he’s created with his two brothers, 13-year-old Nicholas and 16-year-old Joseph, on the Jonas Brothers’ debut album, It’s About Time. And it’s no wonder since the boys’ influences include an eclectic mix of artists ranging from the Ramones to the Jackson 5 to the Modern Lovers–all purveyors of tight, catchy anthems. One thing is for sure, the Jonas Brothers are all ready to keep the momentum going strong. “We go crazy on stage!” says Kevin. “It’s so much fun!”
