Rock Gods on The Sunset Strip

Yesterday, the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne and his good friend Slash swung by the House of Blues Sunset Strip to sign the Ozzy Osbourne Guitartown guitar. Fans and press were there in full effect waiting hours to see their favorite heavy metal men.

We had a second to talk to Slash and asked him about his favorite Roxy memory. He told us about his mother being in The Rocky Horror Picture Show live stage performances at The Roxy that started in 1974. Slash recalled being so young and getting to hang out in the venue. Cool, right?

Ozzy gave us a minute of his time and here’s what he had to say..

Here’s some pics from The Roxy’s own Erik Voake:

SSMF Memories

The Sunset Strip Music Festival still resonates over a month later. It took place August 26-28, 2010 and included all the legendary spots of The Sunset Strip and then some. The memories that were created that weekend are ones that will stay with us for years to come. The goosebumps we felt singing along with The Smashing Pumpkins, the undeniable need to jump on stage during Semi Precious Weapons, the urge to throw your fist in the air when Slash and Fergie did “Paradise City.” All these things we can’t push out of our minds, but really, who’s trying to?

The community this festival provided was remarkable. Everyone was there for the music and for each other. We all wanted to be a part of something bigger and for that weekend, we made history.

Watch this video, share your favorite memory and a random comment will win two tickets to Nico Vega and Saint Motel on October 29.

3rd Annual SSMF Honoree Announced

Rock Icon To Kick Off Festival At Aug. 26 Tribute Event
SSMF 2010 Set For Aug. 26, 27 & 28 In West Hollywood

Legendary guitarist SLASH will be honored at the third annual SUNSET STRIP MUSIC FESTIVAL (SSMF). SSMF will celebrate Slash, who is synonymous with The Sunset Strip, for his contributions to the history of The Strip as well as the music industry. The tribute event kicks off the three-day music fest and honors icons who have made an impact on the legacy of The Sunset Strip. The August 26 event will take place at the House of Blues Sunset Strip.
Adding to the celebration, the City of West Hollywood will also declare Aug. 26, 2010, “Slash Day.”

“I am sincerely overwhelmed to be the recipient of the Sunset Strip Music Festival honors! The Strip and West Hollywood have been my stomping grounds since I was a little kid,” noted Slash. “I grew up in and around the music scene here. It is where I got my start in the music business and where I still feel most at home. Thank you so much.”
Known for his skillful, soulful hard-rock guitar solos, Slash’s career has continued to grow from his early days performing at the Whisky A Go-Go with Guns N’ Roses to his collaborations with Michael Jackson (“Black And White,” “Give In To Me”), Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and directors Quentin Tarantino and Darren Aronofsky (core contributions to the “Jackie Brown” soundtrack and the signature sound of the score to “The Wrestler”).
Slash traces his love of music and exploring spirit to his childhood in England, where his father introduced him to the sounds of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds and other classic, groundbreaking acts. He got an insider’s view through his teen years after the family moved to Los Angeles, his father a graphic artist who worked with David Geffen for such artists as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell and his mother a costume designer for many top pop artists. Almost on a whim, he and friend Steve Adler started playing music together; Slash on guitar and Adler on drums. In the early ’80s, influenced by such bands as Lemmy’s Motorhead, he and Adler formed a band, recruiting bassist Duff McKagan. Within a year, with the addition of singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin, the venture had morphed into Guns N’ Roses – and by the end of the decade had changed the course of rock history.
Slash has also lent his talents to bands Slash’s Snakepit and the Grammy Award-winning Velvet Revolver as well as a self-titled solo album, which features guest spots from artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie, Lemmy, Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale and Adam Levine among others, set for release on April 6.
“You cannot mention The Sunset Strip without thinking of Slash. His influence changed the course of rock and roll and can be seen daily on The Strip,” stated Todd Steadman, executive director of the Sunset Strip Music Festival. “He continues to support The Sunset Strip and has been a part of the festival from its inaugural year, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate him for his contributions to this legendary music boulevard.”
“The City of West Hollywood is so proud to be home to the world-famous Sunset Strip, and we look forward to again hosting the Sunset Strip Music Festival,” noted West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land. “Building on the first two successful events, we’re certain that this year’s festival will be an amazing celebration of The Strip, its history and great music. That celebration will be even more exciting with the recognition of Slash as one of the festival honorees. He has energized audiences worldwide, but holds a special place in the ongoing legacy of The Sunset Strip.”
Previous SSMF honorees include Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and Elmer Valentine, who helped shape the live music experience on The Strip with the creation of The Roxy Theatre, The Rainbow and the Whisky A Go-Go, and rock icon Ozzy Osbourne, whose first U.S. performance was at the Whisky with Black Sabbath in 1970.
Similar to the 2009 SSMF, this year’s event will feature live performances in all six music venues (Cat Club, House of Blues, Key Club, The Roxy Theatre, Viper Room and Whisky A Go-Go) on Friday, Aug. 27 and Saturday, Aug. 28. The three-day event will conclude with a street festival on Saturday, Aug. 28, which includes a street closure from San Vicente Boulevard to Doheny Drive allowing for outdoor stages as well as live performances throughout the day and night in the music venues.
More details about the Sunset Strip Music Festival 2010, including artist lineup and ticket information, will be announced.

Camp Freddy and a Night of Cameos

Last night was pretty monumental – we saw the return of Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, Steve Lukather of TOTO, and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top all rocking out! Paired with the always tenacious Navarro and Company – epic!

Also, don’t quote us on this…but if you happened to be listening to Jonesy’s show on INDIE 103.1 this morning you might have heard that the Prince of Darkness himself will be making an appearance at the Camp Freddy finale next week – true or false? We’re not saying…but it’s not to be missed!

Farewell To Freddy

The month of Camp Freddy Mayhem has become this Rock N Roll machine that has been the talk of the town! It’s taken over like no one could have ever imagined. It started off great as we were so excited to be able to hold one of our Roxy contests to find the lucky openers – which allowed local bands to actually warm up the stage for Freddy. What a great opportunity. And now, we’ve had FIVE sold out shows – countless special guests – and killer set lists. Over the past 4 weeks, we’ve seen Tommy Lee, Terry Nunn, Chester of Linkin Park, Brandon Boyd of Incubus, Chino of the Deftones, Jerry Cantrell, Lemmy Kilmister, B-Real and Sen Dog, Tiffany, Metal Skool, Cory from Slipknot/Stone Sour, Tom Morrello as well as our house favorite Mark McGrath – to name a few! On top of the Sex Pistols Paul Cook, Glen Matlock and Steve Jones and GnR legends Duff and Slash! Insanity. We hate to rub it in, because the Freddy Finale tonight is of course sold out – but for the lucky, this show will take the cake! Every Thursday the chaos starts early – so make sure you stay tuned as Nic and I twitter the day away. We’ll keep you updated as always, on all the nitty gritty secrets. Thanks to all the guests and the guys – as well as the fans who have made the Roxy their nightlife staple for the month. We hope to see you all soon.

Third Times A Charm With Camp Freddy

As if the first two shows of the residency haven’t been close to perfection – it just keeps getting better! We know the show’s have caused quite a buzz around town…and if you missed last week, don’t worry…I’m sure Chester from Linkin Park and Slash of GnR share the stage a lot….oh wait….So do yourself a favor, and come check out the history that will inevitably be made tonight. I wonder who the guests will be tonight… Tickets here or 310 278 9457.
Check out last week – Chester and Slash
